It’s a confession that the person saying it doesn’t know the history they’re standing on. West Africa wasn’t a continent of stateless people waiting to be discovered. Songhai had cavalry. Dahomey had the Agojie. Asante held off British incursions for most of the 19th century. Europe negotiated with these states as equals for centuries before the balance of power shifted, and it shifted through disease, naval tech, and an arms trade Europe itself controlled. Not through some inherent difference in who could fight. And that resistance didn’t stop once people were in chains. The Jamaican Maroons fought the British to a standstill and got a treaty out of it in 1739, an empire negotiating because it couldn’t conquer. Gaspar Yanga forced Spain to legally recognize a free Black town in Mexico in 1618. The quilombos at Palmares ran an independent state in Brazil for almost a hundred years. Hundreds of enslaved people marched on New Orleans in 1811 in the largest revolt in U.S. history. The British couldn’t even hold the Garifuna on St. Vincent, they exiled them instead.
