@drmaryclaire: Being asleep and getting quality sleep are not necessarily the same thing. In this conversation with Dr. Kristen Holmes, we unpack why sleep disruption in menopause may not simply come down to hot flashes, and why sedatives can affect the depth of your sleep. If you’re sleeping but still waking up exhausted, this is an important conversation. Progesterone has changed my sleep life. I take it and eat a small fatty snack (spoonful of peanut butter). I’m not exaggerating: I am sleeping better than I have in a decade.

Guess what’s more dangerous than a sedative? Sleep deprivation. It’s the equivalent of driving drunk in studies. You can have optimal hormones and still struggle.

surely poor quality sleep is better than no sleep! I get that these sedatives are not good for ongoing/regular use, but neither is chronic sleep deprivation

I have been on the hormone patch for a decade, but my doctor just added progesterone and testosterone this summer. I am finally sleeping!! And I am dreaming again, the way I used to. It’s like going to the movies!🥰

Early menopause happened to me and so…from 1994 until 2025 I did not have a solid 8 hours. I lived that entire time with interrupted sleep and walking around trying to be a functioning human..I was forced to quit work because I was unable to function in the workplace. I was 57. BHRT is life saving for me but after all these decades it’s a very slow recovery

My doctor won’t prescribe progesterone due to risk for blood clots due to my having MTHFR. Thoughts?
