I'm an Egyptian, this makes no sense, we all eat beans and a lot of other stuff and we watch cooking shows from Egypt and all over the world...he thought we'd be envious of their food if we saw the food on his show? 😄😄

Food is very controversial. In America with obesity and high processed foods, in Egypt, in Cuba all over the world. What the people are allowed to eat is always telling about what kind of government rules them.

He’s saying watery beans like its disgusting but it isnt watery beans and he shouldn’t put down a staple in our cuisine. Its yummy, fulfilling and delightful. Brits eats beans whats his problem????

While I believe his intentions are good nearly half of the things he stated are false. First of all foull is made from fava beans and we eat not because we are poor and don’t have other options but because it has long ancient roots and his description of it being watery is made in such a derogatory manner that I honestly believe he doesn’t even notice. We have one of the most underrated cuisines out there and we are the first people who ate pigeons and specialize in them!! So his analysis has a very colonial undertone even if he doesn’t mean it.

Imagine if Egypt wasn’t an ally, our government and media would be criticizing the Egyptian regime all the time.

I have a hard time watching newer food/travel shows because this show was so much more than that. Newer shows don't come near the way he got into the nooks and crannies of places a lot of people may never see in person.

Hmmm idk how I feel about this. Maybe I’m partial because ful is one of my favorite foods. The point he’s making about the government not allowing its own people to see how they’re living through a foreign lens isn’t wrong, I’m sure his theory on where their fear and caution was coming from is true. However, he wrongly referred to it as chickpeas- it’s not only not that it really tastes nothing like it so I don’t understand where the confusion would be coming from and can’t help but feel it’s an ignorant reduction of the dish that really is - at the heart of this country- and is beloved by all people. Really, people of all social classes in Egypt eat and enjoy foul and there are soooo many different recipes for it that incorporate a lot of different flavors- there’s the alexandrian way (with tahini and tomatoes onions parsley and green chili) there’s foul with sausage there’s foul with butter (my favorite) there’s foul with eggs (also my favorite) - I actually introduced it to a lot of my friends when I was going to university in London and there wasn’t a person I cooked it for that didn’t absolutely love it and incorporate it into their regular diets- it’s vegan- extremely filling- versatile- fills you with energy. It has all the identity markers of what a great staple food is and should be. I love bourdain, and I see and agree with the point he was making here about state sanctioned media, but reducing a food that is at the heart of a nation of over 100 million people - a food that’s kept millions of people alive and fed- a food that if he were to ask the people of Egypt about I’m sure most would speak of with great fondness - to a “watery chickpea dish” incorrectly naming the only ingredient in the dish is.. disappointing
