Since your video complaining about Spanish and Portuguese was apparently taken down, let’s be clear about what it was: a dog whistle. We all know what you were actually objecting to. But here’s something worth considering: you live in a country whose name comes from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer. “America” isn’t even an English name. This country has never been culturally or linguistically English-only. Children encountering a few words or phrases in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, or any other language doesn’t diminish their education. It broadens it. It teaches them that the world, and their own country, is bigger than the language spoken in their own home. That diversity isn’t somehow un-American. It is profoundly American. So racist dog whistles aside, perhaps worry less about the Spanish words in a second grader’s book and more about raising a child who is curious enough to learn what they mean. Do better.

The last two Republican administrations have systematically done as much as they can to cut funding for education. That funding would have typically helped to pay teachers more, not the amount they deserve, but more. It also helped to fund schools to be able to have communal supplies for the students. This is the reality of how things are now due directly to this administration.

As a teacher: just imagine the amount of supplies a young student goes through. We’re talking probably a pencil a day, a glue stick on every project (they use a lot lol) and 1 box of Kleenex every few days during cold season. And in 10 years of teaching, supplies almost never get replenished by parents throughout the year and then we have to buy them out of pocket for your child. That’s why the ask is so much in the beginning if I had to speculate. 😁

Teachers are tired of paying for all these things on their own. Be mad at your district for not funding rooms. Guess what, I HATE organizing 26 kids year worth of supplies to store and take up space in my room. But if I don’t ask for paper, wipes etc, IM paying for it.

Because we live in a country that doesn’t value education. We are the only country that doesn’t supply children’s need at the school. It has nothing to do with the district or teachers.

I speak 5 languages, English is my third, and I was thrilled that my child (like children in every other civilized country) was learning multiple languages in school. She learned Spanish and Latin. In fact she won national awards in Latin. She was an accelerated reader, graduated from high school summa cum laude and is presently on a full ride scholarship to a European university (for her full collegiate career not a “semester abroad”). I would think as a parent you want the biggest possible world for your child.

Schools were fully funded when we were kids. Now they're *drastically* underfunded, and the burden mostly falls on the teachers, but a little bit falls on the parents.

It depends on the state and school district/taxes you live in. Better states for education (e.g., California, CT, NY) will have more opportunities to make those list less for parents in districts that have better education programs based on taxes. A good way to know if the states education is valued is teachers salaries

What are you talking about? The first day donation? Or the everyday supplies? My elementary kids basically have a pencil pouch and two composition notebooks and headphones. Everything else is an optional donation to the classroom. I carry it in during open house. Or put it in 1 grocery bag for my child.
