We often celebrate people smiling in floodwaters, rescuing their pets, carrying their belongings, and helping their neighbors. Their strength and compassion are admirable but their suffering should never be romanticized. Calling us “resilient” should not become an excuse for poor infrastructure, inadequate flood control, weak disaster preparedness, or lack of accountability. 𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠.
