Hot take: The dorms were terrible at my daughters school, so instead of this approach, which is also wasting money, we just paid for a dorm and meal plan because it was required for all Freshmen but then also got my daughter an apartment nearby too. We knew they couldn’t force her to stay there. It wasn’t a prison although it looked like one. First world problem, yes.spoiled daughter yes. But I’m an empty nester and didn’t just didn’t want her living like that. Sorry not sorry. Found a different loophole.

This seems so sad to me. Part of the college experience is decorating your dorm room yourself. You and your roommate get to decide how you want things to be, and slowly you put together the environment that’s right for you and you alone, not an audience. College is supposed to be about meeting the real world in a safe way. How is setting up an expectation that even your dorm room gets a $20,000 facelift going to help with today’s economy and job market when those kids graduate? I’m so sorry. They missed out on the fun experience of getting their dorm room together themselves. Now they’ve stepped into a little perfect world that they’ll have to try to maintain, and the inevitable fall when life isn’t perfect is a painful thing to contemplate.

Most of these kids are staying there for 4-6 years. It’s their home they have to be in every single day. If they or their parents can afford to make it as comfortable as possible for their child I don’t see the problem. It’s a big transition and the first time they are away from home so why not make it their own. They are paying enough to be there they might as well make it cozy.
