The sky appears blue because sunlight interacts with Earth’s atmosphere. Although sunlight looks white, it is actually made of many different colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Each color travels as a wave with a different wavelength. Red light has a longer wavelength, while blue and violet light have much shorter wavelengths. When sunlight enters Earth’s atmosphere, it collides with tiny molecules of oxygen and nitrogen. These molecules scatter the shorter wavelengths of light much more strongly than the longer wavelengths. This process is called Rayleigh scattering. Because blue light has a short wavelength, it is scattered across the sky in every direction. No matter where you look during the day, some of that scattered blue light reaches your eyes, making the entire sky seem blue. Violet light is scattered even more strongly than blue light, so it may seem like the sky should appear violet. However, the Sun produces slightly less violet light than blue light, some violet light is absorbed by the upper atmosphere, and human eyes are more sensitive to blue. Together, these factors cause us to see a blue sky instead of a violet one. The color of the sky changes during sunrise and sunset because sunlight must travel through much more of the atmosphere when the Sun is near the horizon. Along this longer path, most of the blue and violet light is scattered away before the sunlight reaches us. The remaining light contains more red, orange, and yellow wavelengths, creating colorful sunsets and sunrises. Dust, smoke, clouds, and pollution can scatter even more light, sometimes making the colors appear brighter or deeper. The sky can also look different on other planets. Mars, for example, has a thin atmosphere filled with fine dust particles, so its daytime sky often appears reddish. This shows that the color of a planet’s sky depends on the type of atmosphere it has and the particles floating inside it. Therefore, the sky is not naturally blue on its own. It appears blue because Earth’s atmosphere spreads blue light from the Sun across the sky.
