In 2002, in an Oxford lab, a female named Betty was given food at the bottom of a tube and a single straight wire. With nobody teaching her, she bent the tip against a surface into a hook and fished the food out. She repeated it with materials she had never seen, bending or unbending as the problem required. For fourteen years she was the star case of animal intelligence. Then in 2016 researchers filmed wild crows on the island and found that bending twigs into hooks is part of the natural behavioural repertoire of the whole species.
