Jaw pain always comes back no matter what you do? 💡 What’s actually going on: A lot of people hear “TMJ” and immediately think their jaw is permanently damaged. But TMJ is just the name of the joint. It’s like saying “I have shoulder,” or “I have knee.” The real issue is usually TMJ disorder, and it’s a joint that responds extremely well to rehab when you understand the basics of how it works. ⬆️ Step 1: Resisted Opening Hold Fold both fists with your thumbs pointing upward and place the thumbs under your chin while your mouth is open. Gently press upward into the chin as the jaw resists downward. Hold that pressure for a few seconds, relax, and repeat. This helps retrain the jaw to open with control instead of collapsing into the weaker side. ↕️ Step 2: Forward–Back Resistance Glide Keep the same hand and thumb position under the chin, but this time maintain constant upward resistance the entire time. Slowly glide your jaw forward, then back, keeping the movement smooth and steady. This builds strength and coordination in the joint so it stops shifting unevenly. ↔️ Step 3: Side-to-Side Control With Finger Anchor Place both hands horizontally with your pointer fingers touching. Gently hold that contact point between your upper and lower teeth; not biting, just using it as an anchor. Then glide the jaw left and right without letting the fingers move. This improves lateral stability so the jaw tracks evenly instead of snapping or veering. This is an oversimplification of TMJ disorder and jaw pain in general. There’s a lot of nuance, including what’s happening inside the joint and how the surrounding muscles contribute. But the point is that the TMJ still follows the same foundational rehab concepts as every other joint: strength, range of motion, flexibility, and postural or muscular imbalances. Even though it’s the only bi-articulating joint in the body (one bone connecting joints on both sides) it’s still a joint. Most people forget the TMJ is a joint like any other— and that’s why treating it is far more hopeful than it seems. Give this a try! #tmjrelief #jawpain #tmjexercises #physicaltherapy #tmjdisorder
