Rough idle means irregular or unstable acceleration: the engine does not maintain a uniform combustion at low RPMs and can feel shaky, with small variations in revolutions, tendency to shut down or slow recovery when a load like the A/C is connected. In engines that use IAC valve, the ECU regulates the bypass air around the butterfly valve to maintain acceleration. A dirty, clogged or carbonized air intake can let too much or too little air pass. However, before condemning the IAC, a very common problem must be sought: air intakes not controlled by intake manifolds or cracked vacuum lines. These leaks are usually hidden under or behind the intake duct, especially in the manifold folds, PCV connections, booster, EVAP and small vacuum tubes. The crack can be visually closed with the engine off and opened when the engine vibrates or the hose flexes. That air enters without passing through the normal IAC control and, in systems with MAF, can even be unmeasured air. The ECU tries to compensate by moving the IAC and correcting fuel, but ends up with a rough idle, unstable RPMs, poor mixture and eventually P0171/P0174. That is why, in the case of a rough idle related to IAC, the logical order is: first check ducts and hoses for cracks and leaks, check PCV and vacuum connections, clean the throttle body and bypass tube, verify IAC operation and finally relearn the acceleration when the manufacturer requires it.
