Jesus is speaking to the church in Philadelphia,one of the 7 churches in Revelation 2-3.Revelation 3:7-13 is Jesus’ message to the church in Philadelphia,in modern-day Turkey.Of the 7 churches,Philadelphia is the only one Jesus gives no rebuke to.He calls them: - Weak but faithful - “you have little power&yet you have kept my word”_ v8 - Persevering- “you have kept my word about patient endurance”_ v10 - Loyal - They didn’t deny His name even under pressure.They were a small church,probably poor,facing opposition from people who claimed to be God’s people but weren’t. v9 "I am coming soon."Jesus reminds them He is returning.It’s both comfort&urgency. “Don’t give up.I haven’t forgotten you.My return is near.” "Hold on to what you have," “Hold fast” = guard it,don’t let go. What did they have? 1. The Word - they kept it 2. Faith- they didn’t deny His name 3. Perseverance- they endured patiently He’s saying: Don’t trade what’s eternal for what’s temporary just to make life easier. > "so that no one will take your crown." A “crown” in the Bible is a reward for faithfulness.Like a victor’s wreath in a race.He’s not saying someone can steal their salvation.He’s saying: Don’t quit now and lose the reward God has for those who finish well. _2 Timothy 4:8_ The pressure,persecution&compromise around them could cause them to let go &someone else could take their place of honor. Jesus is speaking this to any believer who feels: - Small, overlooked, but still obeying - Tired from holding on - Tempted to compromise to fit in. 1. Hope: _I am coming soon_ — Your suffering isn’t forever 2. Warning: _Hold on_ — Don’t drift.Guard your faith,calling&character 3. Promise: _Your crown is secure if you persevere_ — God sees&He will reward faithfulness.
