Its origin likely comes from medieval carpentry, where long nails were driven through doors and bent flat (dead) to secure them, making the nail permanently useless and "dead". Famous users include Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, who used it in A Christmas Carol to describe Marley.  Meaning & Usage Meaning: Totally dead, lifeless, irrevocably finished, or not working. Examples: "The old phone is dead as a doornail," or "After the power cut, the lights were dead as a doornail".  Origin Historical Roots: First recorded in the 1300s, the phrase refers to medieval doornails that were hammered through a door and bent over on the other side to hold fast, rendering them permanently fixed and unusable.
