I turn 36 this month, and this is the career advice I wish I had at 26 ⬇️ 1️⃣ Your job is not your family You can love your coworkers and spend more hours with them than your actual family. They're still not your family. Your job is a transaction. Do it well, but don't confuse being a good employee with owing a company your loyalty at your own expense. 2️⃣ Don't let one company feed you and starve you I don't mean you need five side hustles or that you should quit your corporate job. I mean don't build your entire future around one company, one title, or one skill set. Corporate isn't the only path to financial freedom. Build skills that give you options, so no single company controls your income. 3️⃣ Don't underestimate how long a career takes I started my career at $27,500. Today I make almost five times that. Not because I found the perfect path, but because I kept learning, taking opportunities, and changing directions when it made sense. 4️⃣ Build a skill set, not just a résumé My career went from planning corporate events to PR to business development to community relations to marketing. Some moves may have looked random at the time, but every role gave me skills I carried into the next. I didn't collect job titles. I built a skill set that gave me options. 5️⃣ Start investing sooner I started at 28 and wasn't consistent, so I've had to play catch-up. If I'd invested just $200 a month at 26 and left it for 30 years, it could have grown to around $450,000 at a 10% average return, and I'd have only put in $72,000. Start with what you can. The amount matters less than giving your money time. 6️⃣ Stop building your career around other people's approval A bigger title or a recognizable company can look great from the outside without making your life better. Nothing wrong with wanting those things. Just make sure you're choosing them because they move you toward the life you want, not because they look good on LinkedIn. ➡️ Follow for more money and career tips
