I don’t really care about being fluent anymore, of course I'd like to improve and be able to express myself better. But “fluency” isn’t what motivates me. What motivates me is being able to understand a joke I wouldn’t have understood a year ago. Listening to a podcast while doing something else and forgetting it’s not in my native language. Discovering new little parts of a culture I never would have understood otherwise. Because if the only goal is “become fluent”, you can spend years feeling like you’re not there yet. There will always another word you don’t know, and I’d rather notice all the things I can do now that I couldn’t do before.
