John 15 isn’t overturning all the promises Jesus has already given throughout John’s Gospel. It’s a metaphor showing us that Jesus Himself is our life. A branch doesn’t produce life by striving to stay attached to the Vine, it bears fruit because its life comes from the Vine. And the context matters. Judas had just departed to betray Jesus. He had been outwardly associated with Jesus and the disciples, yet Jesus had already said, “ye are clean, but not all” (John 13:10–11). After Judas leaves, Jesus tells the remaining disciples, “Now ye are clean” (John 15:3). People can appear to belong to Christ outwardly without actually possessing His life. John 15 isn’t meant to make believers terrified that Jesus will sever them from Himself if they don’t perform well enough. Don’t let people scare you. If you have trusted in Jesus, His death, burial, and resurrection, to make you right with God, you are safe and secure in Him. His life is your very life.
