The show's greatest cultural problem wasn't that it exaggerated the existence of predators; it externalised them. It taught viewers to imagine the threat as the 'creepy man coming into the house', when statistically the much more important safeguarding question is often who has already been invited inside...

I enjoy watching TCAP, and that's the biggest problem. What should be uncomfortable is made kind of funny by the outright public embarrassment and Chris Hansen's demeanor/delivery. The fact Chris Hansen is a meme speaks volumes about the issues with the show. Some people would be shocked to know that mental health professionals, legally, CANNOT report to authorities if someone expresses a desire to abuse minors (only if a specific target and intent is stated). Its an incredibly complicated issue that had some of the nuance stripped away by this program.

Catching also isn’t even the end of the story for criminal matters like this. This isn’t a cop show, a the story doesn’t end with an arrest, there needs to be a conviction too, and most of the guys on the show, about 60% were not convicted

You should check out the EDP445 documentary on YouTube some of the wildest stuff I've seen. It also gets into how 'To Catch a Predator' style YouTubers use it for clout and how the victims get exploited in the process.

just like with other forms of SA, the way we've chosen to focus on scary stranger danger does a disservice to not just everyone who is a victim but also those who get to believe they're not/would never be a perpetrator, because their actions don't look like *that*

Because we didn’t actually catch that many. Most of the actual predators - priests, teachers, scout leaders, neighbors - are never caught because they’re never reported and the circle still goes around.

You know, in Egypt, there's a saying that I feel is very applicable here; it roughly translates to: "people get afraid, not feeling shame" and that's the issue, as you've briefly stated: we've been programmed to view punishment as a satisfying solution; instead, of tackling the issue in a preventative way. It's also especially ironic since there's been research finding a reverse correlation between the harshness of a punishment to a crime and the rates of the crime being committed. If you're interested, there's an Egyptian show called "Lam Shamsia" that I believe helped raise awareness about CSA well and acknowledged the fact that the prep could be someone close to the child, charming even to their community.

It reminds me a lot of Tim Ballard. He was pretty big in Mormon circles and a few years ago he released a movie about his “adventures” rescuing trafficked kids. Turns out a lot of it was highly exaggerated to say the least. People like him make people think that kids are just being snatched off the street when in reality most children are abused at places like home or church.

Hi. American millennial of the Florida variety here. When you say “Americans”, you’re talking about a vast, vast population that is widely different. Our entire system over here is reactionary. There are a multitude of reasons why but DJT is the starburst. A lot of this stems from the boomer generation over here who has held onto “power” for extremely too long, thinking they’re all the smartest in the room and also infantilizing their children well into adulthood. Our current president is a mirror of the worst behavior of his generation. And they are now retiring in droves or power is being ripped from them or they’re dying off. My generation are the first ones that have all the psychological tools and we’re finally starting to get into higher positions. Black and white thinking has never worked in a world that is actually a kaleidoscope of colors, not just gray. We’re working on it. Trauma is a full circle.

I think you are ascribing a lot more influence to this show than it actually had. These sorts of depictions of predators, which in this case were real people, existed long before the show, and existed long after. I have mixed feelings about the show, and the calls for nuance often miss nuance itself - at the time it was airing, most parents (and even kids for that matter) didn’t realize this sort of thing was possible. And as far as its legacy, sure it’s fair to draw a line to kick streamers but I’m also not sure those people needed to see this show to do what they do. I appreciate your point about needing more caution and education about familial predators and I don’t think you’re totally off base but as stated this is a bit hyperbolic.
