@frankly_rob: imagine being a farmer and with no other option than to rip out the trees you spent years on developing. we recently visited a property near Byron bay and the farmer was telling us that it just wasn't worth producing macadamias anymore. why is the government not helping these farmers find# new customers around the world? #farmtok #farmlife #macadamia #australia

I’d rather buy direct from the farmer and I still pay the same amount I would pay the Shop to the farmer

as a kid in the 70's on the north coast, I watched everyone jump into custard apples, then in the 80's they were ripped out, and it was avocados. Then in the 90's, avocados went and macadamias went it. Then the maccas were replaced with newer higher producing better quality varieties of trees. Now I am seeing pecans going in everywhere. I think it was often more about subsidies and tax benefits.... Not a lot of sympathy.

grapes more specific vineyards , emu farms , deer we will call it venison can charge more, Alpacas , olives groves , fish aqualture farming , rare sheep breeds , exploration , the list is endless but dont worry it was all tax deductible & now their on the way to new finds. Nice spot for a Data Centre , powerlines are already up , just get rid of those trees.🤔

One of the problems is most of the farmers have been doing it for 20 years and are at retirement age. The land is worth a lot as cleared land, whereas if they want to keep farming they need to keep investing into the farm and equipment. Break even at farm gate is $2.50-$3.00 per kg. Pricing is $4.20ish so I don’t know where the $1.90 number you quote.

Sell direct and shame the supermarkets. Turn into macadamia oil. You don’t have to resort to pulling out the trees. It seems extreme. Obviously something else is going on.

Why don’t farmers sell direct to public and undercut supermarkets.. the problem is greedy farmers try and sell direct to public for a lot more than even the supermarkets charge.. how bout u sell for half price say 15dollar a kilo where u still profit and steal all big corporations customers….
