Dipping the pots in glaze is really only the first step in the process. Once they’ve been submerged, outside first, then the inside — for the simple reason that this glaze dries in a delicate layer, and if I dipped the inside first, then I’d have to apply pressure with my hands against the dry surface as the outside is dipped, which could damage it — then, after this they’re allowed to dry fully. Normally by the following day the damp glazed surfaces have dried out and only then will I clean up the piece, the second part in the process, with my finger tips, a little paring knife and a soaked sponge. The entire pots is checked over, irregularities are removed, and then the vessel is set aside with all the others now waiting their turn to be packed into my Rohde KG-340 gas kiln, to be reduction fired to 1290ºc.
