DAY 7/101: What Business Are You Really In? The first time I ever had to seriously think about this question was during a conversation with @feladurotoye. He asked me, “What business are you in?” I remember thinking, That’s easy. I’m a content creator. I’m in the content business. But he asked again: “No… what business are you in?” Then it dawned on me that I didn’t have an answer. But the question stayed with me and I kept trying to figure it out. Over time, I realized that I had it all wrong. Content isn’t the business. It’s the medium. Creators are not all in the same business simply because we all make content. Two people can post on the same platform, have the same number of followers, yet be building completely different businesses. Why? Because they’re serving different people. Different industries. What works for someone in another industry may be completely wrong for yours. The audiences think differently, spend differently, and value different things based on their priorities. And if you’re already making money from content, this is even more important than you think. You can’t afford to keep winging it. You need to know exactly what business you’re in. ‘Cause once you do, you begin to see where content fits into the bigger picture. That’s how some creators have gone from making food content to curating culinary experiences, publishing cookbooks and building restaurants. (@sisi_yemmie, @hildabaci x @myfoodbyhilda) From makeup tutorials to launching a beauty brand (@hudabeauty) From educational content to hosting community-led events in real life. (@Ericgugua x @beyondconvention_) (financialjennifer x @thefintribe) (@peaceitimi x @foundersconnect_) From travel content to building a travel company (@almaasinobi x @kaijego) Content is powerful. But it’s not the whole business. It’s one tool. Your job is to understand the industry you’re in, earn your place in it, and intentionally take up space within it. Some problems content can solve beautifully, but some require you to show up in the real world. This realization is what opens the door to potentially building something that lasts. #creator101 #contentcreation
