explaining.medicals Malaria begins with the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which injects malaria parasites called Plasmodium into the bloodstream. The parasites first travel to the liver, where they enter liver cells and multiply. After this stage, the parasites are released into the blood and invade red blood cells. Inside red blood cells, the parasites continue multiplying. The infected cells eventually rupture, releasing more parasites into the bloodstream and triggering repeated cycles of infection. This is responsible for many of the characteristic symptoms of malaria, including fever, chills, sweating, headache, and extreme weakness. Some forms of malaria, particularly Plasmodium falciparum, can become life-threatening. In severe cases, infected red blood cells can interfere with blood flow to vital organs, potentially causing severe anemia, brain involvement, kidney problems, respiratory complications, or organ failure. The disease can be diagnosed with blood tests and treated with antimalarial medicines. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are especially important because severe malaria can progress rapidly. Malaria isn't caused by the mosquito itself-the mosquito acts as a vector, carrying the parasite from one human host to another.
