Applicants are reportedly facing waiting periods of 44 to 50 months, especially in the Lisbon and Porto areas. And for many people, the wait may continue even longer. The situation has become particularly concerning because the nationality process at the IRN offices responsible for processing applications in Lisbon and Porto appears to be moving extremely slowly. Behind every nationality application, there is a real person, a real family, and a real life waiting for an answer. For many applicants, this is not simply paperwork. It is their future. Many applicants are living with constant stress, anxiety and frustration because they see little or no progress in their processes. They have built their lives here, worked here, paid taxes, raised their children here and contributed to Portuguese society—yet they are still left waiting for a decision. How long is too long? Waiting 40, 45 or even 50 months for a nationality process is an enormous amount of time in anyone’s life. The Portuguese Government and IRN must seriously look into this situation and ask an important question: Is it acceptable for people to wait four years—or even longer—for a decision on their nationality application? Applicants are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for fairness, transparency and a timely decision. The authorities must hear the voices of those who have been waiting for years. The Portuguese Government, the relevant authorities and IRN need to take this issue seriously and work towards reducing these delays. Because behind every application number, there is a human being waiting. A mother. A father. A child. A family. A person who simply wants an answer. Today, with heavy hearts, nationality applicants are appealing to the IRN offices in Lisbon and Porto: Please hear our voices. Please look at our cases. Please give applicants the fair treatment they deserve. This is not about demanding something extraordinary. This is about the right to have your application processed and a decision made within a reasonable time. Portugal is a democratic country, and people deserve transparency, dignity and fairness.
