As a kid I really wanted to be a part of the choir and couldn’t understand why the deaf kids weren’t up on the stage rehearsing with the rest of the kids (I understand now, of course). I asked the interpreter to sign the exact words to the lyrics for me, and she did! I still appreciate that to this day because I was really heartbroken watching the hearing kids practice and looked around and realized it was only myself and my friends with hearing devices who were sitting out, and learning the lyrics to the song at least made me feel better! I felt that I could at least lip sync along with the hearing kids when it was time to perform at our concert, and not be the odd one out. This video shows how she signed it- for the long sustaining notes, she fingerspelled to show which letters were being dragged, and then signed “finish” at the end to show me when to stop. She also pointed up to show when the notes were higher, and back down when the notes were back to “neutral”. She would even stop to explain how to pronounce the words I didn’t know in the songs. The deaf kids sat below the stage and watched the hearing kids practice while the interpreter showed me what they were singing (us deaf kids didn’t rehearse), and on the day of the concert, the interpreter stood below the stage and signed the songs to us, and the deaf kids copied along while the hearing kids sang! I was requesting SEE before I even knew what it was. Nails by Veronique_Presson_Nails on IG #asl #see #signlanguage #deaf #hardofhearing
