@dw.science: Solar eclipse glasses sold out? We've got you covered! Watch the total or partial solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, using a homemade solar eclipse box, aka a pinhole projector. Looking directly at the sun without special eclipse glasses is dangerous – even with sunglasses! You might think that staring at the sun during an eclipse can’t harm you, but the radiation is so powerful that it can still cause serious damage to your eyes. During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely covers the sun, unlike in an annular eclipse, where a fiery ring of sun remains visible even when the moon passes in front of it. What we show here is how to make a device that works using the same principles as a camera. A tiny hole lets the light from the eclipse through, projecting an image of it onto a screen for safe observation. DO NOT LOOK INTO THE SUN DIRECTLY! To much work. Just use your smartphone selfie camera and face your back to the sun and you can see it perfectly. People don’t wast time building all this when you you can have a much better view with your smartphone

Can I watch the eclipse from the side of my eye? So not looking directly into it but using my peripheral vision?

In the States they give away the glasses whenever a solor eclipse comes around. Germany says-"give you glasses? make it yourself, Gawwwd"
