Building the canter is about the horse becoming more organised, and developing strength and balance. We use counter canter with counter flexion to: • Unlock the jowl • Soften both sides of the neck • Help the horse stand the shoulder up and carry Then we use: • Canter “snowmen” (20m true, 10m counter) • Forward and back in counter canter • Shoulder-in into leg yield for ribcage mobility and connection to the outside rein Counter canter is one of the most powerful tools. It removes the inside-leg-dominant pattern — where horses lean on the rider’s inside leg and fall through the shoulder. Instead, it shifts the weight to the outside hind — the first stride in the canter sequence, and the one that actually carries. It straightens the body, lifts the shoulder, engages the core, and helps the horse come over the back. It also makes them wait — which is why it’s so useful for flying changes.
