@alexanderarroyogreen: The most confusing emotionally unavailable people are not always distant. Sometimes they call you for hours. They become jealous. They ask whether you like them. They want reassurance, exclusivity, affection, and constant access to your presence. From the outside, they appear extraordinarily emotionally available. But then you try to move beyond romantic intensity and actually know them. You ask about their inner world, and they quickly close the subject. You share something meaningful about yourself, and they show almost no curiosity. You introduce a subject you both have in common, hoping for some genuine mental back-and-forth, and receive little more than: “Oh, okay.” Eventually, you stop generating the conversation…and discover that there is no conversation. That is when you realize they may want the experience of closeness without the process that creates it. They want proximity without mutual discovery. Reassurance without revelation. Attachment without sustained curiosity. Sometimes this comes from a life in which having feelings was dangerous or useless. They learned to smile while describing something painful, say “that happened in the past,” and move forward before they ever have to feel it. That does not make them malicious. It does not automatically make them narcissistic. Their emotional defenses may have once been necessary for survival. But understanding why a door is locked does not create a relationship on your side of it. You cannot build intimacy merely by remaining present while another person receives your attention. And you cannot spend the entire relationship supplying enough affection, excitement, and reassurance to momentarily bring them to life. Some people do not reject closeness. They reach for it constantly. They simply have not learned how to participate in it.
