@hackproduct9: Most MCP tutorials you'll find are already out of date. ⚡ On July 28 the spec dropped the initialize handshake and the session ID entirely. MCP went stateless. If your mental model still has a "connection," it's wrong. Here's MCP 101, current as of spec 2026-07-28 👇 🟢 THE PIECES 1. Host — the app you're already in. Your IDE or desktop app. 2. Client — one client per server. Three servers means three clients. 3. Server — a thin skin over the API you already have. 🔵 THE PRIMITIVES 4. Tools — the model decides to call it. 5. Resources — the app decides to attach it. Context, not an action. 6. Prompts — the user picks it from a menu. A slash command, shipped by the server. 🟡 THE WIRE 7. JSON-RPC — every request carries its own version, identity and capabilities in _meta. 8. Transports — stdio for local, Streamable HTTP for everything else. HTTP+SSE is deprecated. 9. Stateless — no handshake, no Mcp-Session-Id. Any request lands on any instance. 🟣 THE NEW STUFF 10. MRTR — the tool pauses, asks you, and resumes. This replaced server-initiated sampling. 11. Auth — tokens bound to one issuer. DCR is deprecated, CIMD replaces it. 12. Extensions — Tasks, MCP Apps and Enterprise Managed Auth ship outside the core. 👀 The one nobody says: 4, 5 and 6 are not three flavors of the same thing. They differ by who pulls the trigger. Tools are model-controlled, Resources are app-controlled, Prompts are user-controlled. Most confused MCP servers expose something as a tool that should have been a resource, then wonder why the model calls it at random. The rule: pick the primitive by asking who should decide, not by what the data is. 📸 Screenshot the grid. Save it before you write your next server.
