A few death masks from the Roman period survive. These were intentionally made from the person’s face after death so that a positive image could be created from poured concrete and saved by loved ones for a lasting memory of the departed. We are looking at such a positive image. This process and the original death masks (a negative of what we see in this TikTok are described and shown in the paper below, available on ResearchGate.
