We’ve been trying to understand mental illness for thousands of years — and somehow, the stigma around psychiatry is still very much alive. Part of the problem is that psychiatry deals with things that are inherently complicated: behavior, emotion, identity, relationships, biology, environment, and a brain we still don't fully understand. That complexity can make people uncomfortable. It can also make psychiatric treatment easier to dismiss, criticize, or reduce to “just pills” or “just talking.” But we don't demand perfect certainty from cardiology, oncology, neurology, or any other field before accepting that the conditions they treat are real and deserving of treatment. Psychiatry deserves that same nuance. Mental illness is complicated. Psychiatric treatment is complicated. That doesn't make either one less real.
