@areyouevengreek: 37 years ago, on 9th August 1989, Acropolis Now hit Australian television, and for a generation of migrant kids like me, something changed. Growing up, we were called “wogs”. And when migrants appeared on Australian TV, we were often the stereotype, the funny accent, or someone else’s version of us. Then came Acropolis Now. Suddenly, we weren’t just the punchline. We were telling the joke. Nick Giannopoulos, George Kapiniaris, Mary Coustas, Simon Palomares and the incredible cast and creatives behind the show were pioneers of what became known as “wog comedy” in Australia. They took the migrant experience, the accents, the parents, the food, the traditions, the culture clashes and the madness of growing up between two cultures, and made it ours. Acropolis Now didn’t just make us laugh. It helped change the way multicultural Australia was represented on our screens and made so many of us feel seen. So to Nick, George, Mary, Simon and everyone who brought Acropolis Now to life, thank you for being pioneers. ❤️ 37 years later, we’re STILL quoting it. And seriously... can somebody PLEASE get Acropolis Now streaming so a whole new generation can discover it?! 🇬🇷🇦🇺 👇 What’s your favourite Acropolis Now scene or line? #acropolisnow #greekaustralian

when you can laugh at something it no longer is taken seriously.
comedy broke stereotypes and changed racism in Australia.
thats why offensive comedy is so good..

I'm Aussie Scott and I loved this show growing up. I grew up rural, and we had greeks. We all shared our love for the jokes and we would educate each other if we didn't understand. It gave us the opportunity to be open to new cultures, languages and insults !! I later worked for Greeks in a Greek restaurant.... knowing Malaka before I started was lifesaver 😂😂😂

You are absolutely right, we saw ourselves on that show, and our Aussie mates loved the show as well. These guys are an important part of our history growing up, and let’s not forget it all started with the stage show Wogs out of Work at the Enmore Theatre in around’87 I think. That’s when we saw our parents and uncles and aunties being played on stage, laughing so hard! Thank you guys so much, and you guys were also responsible for turning the word Wog into a non derogatory term ❤️

Well said! So many memorable scenes and episodes hard to pick one but the Shakespeare production in the café probably had the most memorable scenes along with the Greek Easter episode

Brilliant post!! 🥰 Agree with everything except Con the fruiterer… being named after one of his daughters gave me trauma to this day 😂😂😂 We loved Acropolis Now so much growing up. Has anyone seen my cousin Jim, is he here, is he here, did you seen him. 🤣

I'm a "skip" but grew up with Acropolis Now and the OG Heartbreak High (and Heartbreak Kid!). Obviously I had an awareness it was comedy and drama, but it also gave me a glimpse into different cultures. I like to think I would have been anti-racist anyway but these shows with such inclusivity undoubtedly helped shape my views.
