26 of 28 “avocado oil” chips failed a lab purity test. UC Davis researchers tested 54 avocado-oil products — chips, dressings and mayo — against the chemical fingerprint of real avocado oil. Nearly 9 in 10 failed (Applied Food Research, 2026). All 12 avocado-oil salad dressings failed. So did every U.S.-made mayonnaise they tested. Here’s the catch: there is no FDA “standard of identity” for avocado oil, so there’s no legal definition to enforce. Real avocado oil runs about $4–$5 a pound; soybean, canola and safflower cost under $1.50 — so the cheaper seed oils get blended in. This is economic fraud, not a safety scare. But if you buy avocado oil specifically to avoid seed oils, you may be eating exactly what you’re trying to skip. Olive oil held up far better — of roughly 20 products tested, only one failed.
