Lindsay Clancy's defense is that doctors ignored, failed to detect, or otherwise dismissed the postpartum psychosis she says she experienced when she killed her three young children in January 2023. Clancy was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and psychiatrist Jennifer Tufts testified about her prescriptions and appointments, stating she showed no signs of psychosis, only depression and anxiety. In cross-exam, Clancy's lawyer Kevin Reddington questioned Tufts about her notes about an October 2022 appointment in which she wrote Clancy was "not hyper, pressured speech" and implied Tufts observed Clancy having "pressured speech" indicative of psychosis. Tufts was adamant she meant Clancy had "not pressured speech." "Not hyper, not pressured speech is what I meant. I know it doesn't say not, but that is exactly what I meant," Reddington said. Reddington implied Tufts was improvising on the witness stand, though she's always testified that Clancy didn't have pressured speech and showed no signs of psychosis. "When did you see this that you noticed that it did not say not?" Reddington asked. "I don't care what it says. I know what I meant," Tufts answered. "Well, when you wrote this, you did not say not pressured speech. You said in the medical record, pressured speech, right?" Reddington asked. "No," Tufts answered. "Does it say that?" Reddington asked. "'Not' is right before 'not hyper comma pressured speech.' The two are following the 'not,'" Tufts answered. "When you put down in a medical record, heart racing, comma severe anxiety, comma worried about kids, comma baby, comma sleep, comma yawns but not drowsy. Period. Not hyper. Comma, pressured speech. That's what you wrote, right?" Reddington asked. "She did not have pressured speech. I wrote that, but you're misinterpreting my note," Tufts answered. "Am I reading this correctly? And the jury will be able to look at it. That you put 'not hyper, pressured speech.' Did I read that right?" Reddington asked. "Yes, but your interpretation is incorrect," Tufts answered. "As opposed to yours?" Reddington asked, then ended his exam. Jennifer Sprague, an assistant state attorney in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, followed up by showing Tufts more records from the appointment in which Tufts said Clancy's speech was appropriate.
