The real problem is not simply how AI uses engagement and algorithms to influence us. The deeper question is: do we understand ourselves well enough to use AI, rather than allowing AI to use us? AI can help us learn, question, create and perhaps become more intelligent. But it can also become another escape from reality. There will always be people searching outside themselves for someone—or something—to tell them what is true. But awareness changes the relationship. When you develop self-knowledge through your own experience, observation and growth, you become much harder to manipulate because you don't blindly depend on AI, algorithms, authorities or any other external source to define reality for you. Every powerful tool can be used wisely or unconsciously. AI is no different. The question isn't only what AI will become. It's what we will become while using it.

I agree. Like my grandfather used to say, 'Everything in moderation.' Some engagement / excitment / choice / freedom / sugar is excellent. Not enough - life sucks. Too much - health problems. The free market system is very good at solving the 'not enough' problem. It seems to me, we have to create a much more robust, responsive, participatory, intelligent regulatory system to moderate the 'too much' problem. Our current system is just not adequate for the task.
