@atsbaseball: Over the last 10-20 years we have seen a rapid increase in arm injuries among MLB pitchers. At the same time the average fastball velocity has jumped ~3 MPH. Is this the reason for all of the injuries? Or does it go deeper than that? The Full Jeff Passan Episode is live on Youtube! Follow for more💨
Bartolo Colon was an all star throwing a four seam in the 80’s

The MLB won't even LOOK at a pitcher like Jamie Moyer today and I guarantee a pitcher like that could still be successful today 79 mph fastball.

What you should blame is the evolution of data analytics saying that velocity is the best predictor of success due to BAA being much lower for guys that throw in the upper 9s or low triple digits. It’s not incorrect data either. It’s just reality

Someone needs to look into how Japanese players tend to their arm care..because TJ is vastly less frequent there..

Nolan Ryan wasn't a great pitcher... He had a great arm that allowed him to over throw for decades... Pitching doesn't require 95 mph... It requires demand of your pitches...

I didn’t think Matt Barnes would be a good podcaster/interviewer when he first started but I’m surprised how good his questions are, especially considering he’s doing an interview about a whole new sport

This is why there is no more brain in baseball. Throw hard, hit hard. Strikeout, home run. That’s it..

They're all throwers. They're no longer pitchers. So they blow their arms out.

This is just not true in any regard. First if you throw 85 and spot up then you are getting recruited. Not necessarily D1 but you will play D2/3. If you throw 90 you will be recruited D1 in some capacity unless there is a glaring red flag like grades and off the field stuff. Furthermore, we know why UCL injuries happen. Velocity is 100% the reason for the driving force for this as well as young players are not strong enough to handle the force that is being put on their arm.

Part of the reason why having a 95 MPH Fastball was so big back in the day was because that meant realistically you were probably throwing 98, 99, 100 when you really let it go. But you could take that 5 MPH off, pitch 2 or 3 more innings, maybe give up a run or two and hand your closer or maybe a middle reliever a VERY winnable game. But the MLB seems to have forgotten that all. Just throw hard. What’s that? You’re tearing ligaments in your arms? How is that possible? Maybe because humans aren’t meant to throw that hard that often? Come on now. This isn’t that hard. Everyone knew this just a few years ago. And by a few years ago I mean like 8 or 9 years ago.

I’d like to see the difference in injury rate between supinators and pronators. Supinators leave their elbows in more compromised and vulnerable positions

I’m of the opinion that until you get to puberty and high school there is absolutely no reason to try and sell out for velocity because you have no idea what your body is going to be like when you’re older and you’re only putting more strain on your arm
