@travelwithnoon: The most expensive zip code in America was once owned, all of it, by a carpenter who was the first child in his family born free. Dana Dorsey came to Miami from Georgia around 1896 with a fourth grade education and a job swinging a hammer for Henry Flagler's railroad. He noticed the Black laborers building the city had nowhere to live, so he bought one lot in what is now Overtown for twenty five dollars, put a rental house on it, and used the rent to buy the next lot. He did that for twenty years. In 1918 he bought the island out in Biscayne Bay. Twenty one acres, the whole thing. There was not one beach in the entire city a Black family could set foot on, and Dorsey was going to build one. A year later it was gone, and the developer who bought him out is the name on Fisher Island today. So he gave the city away instead. Land for a park. The ground under a school. And fifteen days before he died, the land for a library. Today a park, a school, a library, a street and a college in Miami carry his name. Most people have never heard it. Send this to someone who should. Follow for the untold stories behind the world's most iconic places, and save this one for the next time somebody tells you Fisher Island has always been what it is now. #DanaDorsey #FisherIsland #Overtown #MiamiHistory #travelhistory

Fisher Island, or Dorsey Island? He owned all twenty one acres of it first. Which name belongs on it 👇

Around 2,000 people came to his funeral in 1940, and businesses in Overtown closed during the service.

Dorsey bought that island in 1918 to build a beach Black families could actually use. Miami did not get one until Virginia Key opened on 1 August 1945, after activists led by attorney Lawson E. Thomas staged a wade in at a whites only beach. Twenty seven years after Dorsey tried, and five years after he died.
