The Iran war will go down in history as one of the most consequential foreign-policy failures in our history, led by an administration whose incompetence, arrogance, and lack of judgment have been staggering. Those who supported and enabled these decisions cannot simply distance themselves from the consequences. Leadership requires accountability, and so does political support. The damage being done will leave this country weaker, more divided, and less secure for a life time. History will ultimately judge not only the people who made these decisions, but also the Republican Party and its leaders for their complacency, silence, and unwillingness to stand up when responsible leadership was desperately needed. Political parties survive by earning the public’s trust—and once that trust is lost, getting it back can be incredibly difficult.
