Skin contact was one of the worse books I’ve ever read. The changing POVs every chapter but the narratives being identical sent me through a spiral everytime

I have two separate ranking systems, one for lighthearted fun easy reads, and one for more impactful/deep reads. You really can’t compare the two categories on the same rubric

I feel like what my stars mean depends on the genre. A five star romance is SO different from a five star fantasy which is so different from a five star lit fic.

This is what I do maybe it would resonate with you - a true 5 star for me meets the perfect combination of enjoyment and impact, 4 star usually has one of those things slightly lacking but still would recommend it, 3 stars for me is a book as you described like generally “hit the spot” for what I wanted but didn’t blow my mind and probably won’t remember it long term, 2 stars are for when I had fundamental problems with something about the story/writing/narrative structure and 1 stars are for books that I feel are so bad/morally problematic that I couldn’t recommend anyone read them.

Why not use a point system? Each category (enjoyment, impact, writing quality, etc) could have like 3 ratings and then you add up the points. So whatever has max points (like 10-12) would be a five star read and least points would be 1 star

Listening to this, realizing that we have very, very similar ways of ranking our books. Following you for a long time, I feel like your English major/academia brain might value the weight and quality of a work over a pleasure read. In the same way! If I feel moved it’s closer to art than entertainment

I really don’t like this system. A book written for fun and humour should still be able to get a 5 stars, even if the impact is just to make you laugh. A book should be rated according to what it is. A 2 star isn’t even a pass. It means a pretty poor book. 3 is decent but wouldn’t read again/ has some flaws, 4 really strong and enjoyable but had a couple of things I would change, 5 stars is a book you loved (for whatever reason) and it will stick with you, you would read again, you would recommend and even if it’s not technically perfect, it just makes you happy or emotional or impacts you

I like that! If a 1 star is dnf and 2 is fun reads with little expectation, would a book that you finished but didn’t like (e.g., not a fun read) also be 2 stars?

For me, it’s important that when rating a book, only judging it comparatively to its compatriots genre-wise. There’s no way I could compare a 5⭐️Historical and a 5⭐️Fantasy or even a 5⭐️Romance

i use this since i saw it online somewhere and it’s almost always right on. also my 5 ⭐️criteria is that it has to make me feel a little crazy in a very specific way about how much i’m enjoying it

most of my rankings depend on how likely i am to re-read the book! for me that question alone covers impact, quality, and enjoyment. esp with more emotional, less “enjoyable” reads, if i’m willing to put myself through that again in the future it’s a definite 5 star!
