I agree but the kids in teen dramas have always had money. One tree hill, gossip girl, the vampire diaries, pretty little liars etc. all the kids had money and barely any parental supervision

idk characters like Oona and Ellis both felt somewhat in jeopardy. Also I don’t think the financially security takes away from the emotional baggage and weight of the story & characters. Oona is one of my favourite characters in recent history due to the representation of abandonment issues and queer rep.

I think the problem isn’t necessarily that they don’t have money problems but that they ALL don’t have money problems. Every teen show I watched growing up there was at least one character who represented the working class. Teen Wolf, Scott McCall had money issues, there’s even an episode were there’s a bag of money that belongs to someone else and he’s tempted to take some of the money. The Vampire Diaries, Matt Donovan had to have an after school job just to pay his bills and even talks about it. The OC, Ryan grew up visibly poor and dysfunctional. One Tree Hill, most of the characters were actually solidly middle class and there were consequences for being reckless, Peyton’s dad was rarely at home just so he could pay the bills. Lucas’ mom couldn’t afford to pay his hospital bills after he had heart issues so he had to boot lick his deadbeat dad just so he could pay the hospital bills. Gossip Girl, Dan, Jenny and Vanessa weren’t rich. Veronica Mars, Veronica and her dad were living paycheck to paycheck. Pretty Little Liars, Hanna and her mom had money issues in season 1 and A kept blackmailing them about it. Emily needed a scholarship for college because she otherwise wouldn’t afford it. Lol, even Riverdale, Jughead and his trailer park friends were brokies. Even shows about rich people had working class characters.

It’s been quite a while since I watched it, but from what I remember, Grand Army was a Gen Z show that featured some characters from more working-class backgrounds. It’s a shame it was cancelled after just one season.

I grew up working class near where Sterling Point is set. Its a beautiful beautiful place to live, but hell yeah I would appreciate this show a lot more if it was about the experience of living and working year round in a place rich people consider their 'part-time' home.

I agree it's an issue but I don't think this is a new phenomenon for Gen Z... as millennials, we had the OC and Gossip Girl and PLL! For me, teen dramas tended to be aspirational escapism; a chance to see pretty people wearing really pretty clothes kissing other pretty people

Unfortunately when you get a hit like the summer I turned pretty it becomes a challenge of creating the next the summer I turned pretty instead of pushing the boat out. I feel like in the age of streaming it’s even more precarious as shows get scrapped before the full season has been streamed and so there’s less risk taking.

My partner watched it and I thought pretty much the same as you. Felt very Taylor Swift coded. Not a single non-white face IIRC. Teenagers talking like they’re in their 30’s. I’m clearly not the target audience but it felt so beige and safe.

In France, we've started to call it the "bourgeois gaze", like the male gaze. Movie/show creators are bourgeois, know nothing about the life of the working class and either don't depict it or when they try to, they can't depict it correctly without falling into cliches, stereotypes, caricature or miserabilism.

Everyone is just defending sterling point… I said I liked the show… I’m talking about the prevalence of this culture in the media that gets celebrated and marketed… if you just get in the comments to defend sterling point… (a show I’m not attacking)… I’m deleting your comments.

I definitely agree that Gen Z shows have a pattern, however I found the script in sterling point very refreshing! It felt genuine and not like a 40 yr old wrote it lol, which is how I feel about most shows. The dialogue was realistic is all I’ve observed thus far.

A lot of it comes to escapism right though? I don’t disagree, I miss shows like royle family, skins, shameless of the noughties but what I enjoy about the tween shows is longing for the ‘idyllic aesthetic’ summer and romances I didn’t have growing up

youre right about this being an issue in media these days BUT i think sterling point is the wrong show to use to criticize this. several characters are definitely not rich. we literally see a teenager who is left to take care of her younger sister, and a boy who is "stealing" from the rich because hes worried about his familys finances
