Using literally as an intensifier happens in other languages too, so maybe it's not a bad idea? Maybe it's natural ? I don't think it causes confusion if someone says he is literally boiling on a hot summer day.

but with the example you gave as “the water is literally boiling”, doesn’t that sound a bit off when the water couldn’t possibly have any figurative boiling expression? Almost as if saying “I am literally living” also is right when i couldn’t possibly be doing anything else figuratively
