The Ego... I agree with you and so much more. Have you read: A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckert Tolle? it really changed the way that I see ego. I think you'd find it interesting.

reading carl jung completely changed my mindset on this topic the ego/shadow/sub conscious mindset etc. if you haven't read or listened to his books they're definitely worth the time
