@byjennybayer: Imagine accidentally discovering this beneath your property 😮 The Monteleone Chariot dates to around 550 B.C. and was discovered inside an ancient tomb in Italy in 1902. It's decorated with incredibly detailed scenes from the story of Achilles and is one of the best preserved chariots from ancient Italy before the Roman period. 📍 The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 🇺🇸 #ancienthistory #etruscan #themet #monteleonechariot #ancientitaly
it was found in monteleone di Spoleto, Umbria region

Craftsmen know how amazing it was of an object 2,500 yrs ago. A modern day equivalent would be a one off bespoke race car

Just to add some context: this incredible Etruscan chariot is currently being requested back by the Italian government. It was discovered in Umbria in 1902, smuggled out of Italy, and sold to J.P. Morgan, who then donated it to the Met. Italy's formal restitution demands are backed by historical letters proving that the museum's leadership knew all along that the artifact had been illegally exported 🫣
