Very true. But according to Scripture, we have different manifestations of tongues. At Pentecost, they spoke in other tongues, and men from different regions were amazed because “every man heard them speak in his own language” (Acts 2:4–11). This was a language that could be understood by those who heard it. Then we have the Holy Spirit interceding on our behalf “with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). We also have the tongue that Paul speaks about in 1 Corinthians 14:2: “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” Paul further says, “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14). So Scripture shows us that there are different manifestations and functions not every biblical reference to tongues should automatically be understood as a known human language.
