Just because my mom loves me DOES NOT mean I feel loved by her.

Intellectual intelligence doesn’t equal emotional intelligence, which you have both. What a beautiful gift

As a mom, with an actuarial science degree, you are very very very valid in your grief. I teach my kids anything I can think of. I’m so sorry you didn’t get to have that. You deserved better.

Imagining the relationship you could have had with your parents is really depressing and I fully understand your pain. I’m sorry. Also don’t forget about your dad, he could have stepped in too.

Currently going through this same realization and grieving process with my parents (its been a rough three months 💀) Its been really sad realizing that my parents don’t know me and don’t care to know me. Which is insane because they definitely know and care about my other 4 siblings, but they just gave up on me. You are smart and you are intelligent because YOU taught yourself and if it’s worth anything, im proud of you for that 💖

my parents were so similar. my mom graduated top of her class at auburn vet school with a bunch of awards and my dad got his MBA from Vanderbilt. they never supported me academically. I thought I was stupid until I got my own advanced degree. I often wonder where I would be if I had been raised to be smart, I wish I could be an aerospace engineer with Nasa. I still feel like I have so much unmet potential that I worry I dont have the time or funds to pursue.

Please realize it was NEVER about you our your capacity. It was THEIR lack of patience and THEIR inability to share/teach what they knew. That’s not true smarts imo, that’s just a better ability to memorize and regurgitate. A truly smart person can explain any concept to a 5 year old.

You’re right. And even if it was not her intention it is the outcome. You are valid and correct. To be left behind by your own parents is heinous

Some of the most academically intelligent people tend to narrow their scope despite the vastness of their own research. You are worth all the effort you put into yourself!

imagine how many kids could flourish intellectually if we as a society (both parents and teachers/govs) gave them the time, effort, and grace you’re talking about here. like man…
