I get real with them asap about the fact that they have to talk in front of the class all the time (also a theatre teacher) so I have them pair up and they have to tell a story to their partner about a memory they have involving food (easy, relatable, usually cute or funny or nostalgic) then they introduce their partner to the class “this is so and so, their memory is blah blah”. It’s pretty low stakes because they are talking about another student and not themselves and it rips the public speaking bandaid off right away

i also hate traditional ice breakers so here’s my plan. i’m getting 3-4 puzzles (adjust for class size) from dollar tree, very basic puzzles. but im taking 2-3 pieces from each box and putting them in a different one. that way they have to work together within their group and with the entire class once they realize they’re missing pieces!

I’m the same way. I was at a bridal shower and we played the game with the point system for the random stuff in your purse, and I may do that except with backpacks. 😂
