This! I grew up bilingual and there are so many things in English that make me pause. Even “my ex.” Why have an everlasting term of possession for people who will eventually become strangers? We can honor what was without needing to maintain ownership or attachment to it.. I really do think language subtly shapes how we experience

It’s the same with the Irish language. ‘I am sad’ in Irish is ‘ta brón orm’ which directly translates to sadness is on me. So it’s a passing state, not an identity

It impacts our perception forsure! But also someone who studies linguistics once told me that the terms or ways of expressing in a given language also reflects the culture that already exists. This person gave me the example that French does not have a term for people pleaser because it is not a thing in French culture to have that quality the way it is in English culture so one would not need a particular term for it. Basically, the words that exist in language are indicative of the culture itself. so it’s not only that the words that exist shape our perception but also the words that exist reflect what is important about the culture and what its values are in the first place.

Spanish tutor here - Yes, language does affect the way we see the world and our perception of reality. It’s fascinating how we perceive emotions, time, facts and the way we put them into words. That’s why we get to think very differently about the same experiences but with different languages, and also that’s why people is likely to feel they have different personalities within different languages. You can feel you are more prone to be more or less extrovert/introvert and the language you speak the most is the one that will also impact in your psyche and your coping mechanisms. I’ve studied a lot and also watched a lot of tedtalks, podcasts about actual linguistics talking about those influences and so, yeah, it does affect much. So people who speak more language have more depth into reality and perception of the reality as well.

From my perspective, “I am angry” already is a temporary phrase? Like, I can’t think of a single sentence in which that would connote permanent anger. Native English speakers can tell whether it is an estar vs ser situation based on the context, so we don’t need both (just my opinion).

I learned Spanish when I was 13 so I’m not childhood bilingual, but there are so many things that I prefer to express in Spanish because the emotional weight just can’t come across in English. But if I wanna get super detailed and abstract, I go with English. I love how in Spanish the emotions are temporary rather than define us. Also always been fascinated that estar is used with muerto. 🤔

it does ! language also reflects the values of a specific culture. very common example, but the usted form in Spanish reflects the way that respect of elders is a more prominent aspect of most Spanish speaking communities comparatively to English which never even created a separate grammatical category of conjugation to show respect. some languages only have two color words, like dark and light. some languages have a specific word for your sisters husbands brothers child to reflect the importance of family. anyways, my nerd fixation but it’s fascinating and you’re on to something !!
