Okay listen the whole “we domesticated and abandoned” thing is true. IT IS NOT WHY THEYRE BAD AT NESTS! Prior to their domestication they lived on cliff sides symbiotic with mountain goats. They’d basically just find a divot in a rock to use as a nest

Pigeons CAN build decent nests, saw a post where one did so right on top of anti-bird spikes (which is diabolical 'cause who really gives af if birds are on building ledges?) but the reason so many pigeons don't build decent nests is 'cause of human interference, then abandonment.

Im against all the hate that pigeons get because of their nests because lots of people have a songbird-based idea of what a nest should look like— enough to keep it from falling off a branch. Pigeons, however, come from mountainous areas that have shelves where all they need is to not roll off the flat part. Pigeons do more than enough to prevent that with very few sticks.

They’re not bad at building nests. They don’t build traditional nests. They just put a few sticks around their eggs so they don’t fall off the cliffs they typically live on/by

fun fact! they're known as "bad nest makers" because they're actually evolved to live on cliffsides. in their natural environment, they would seek out natural hollows in the cliffs to lay their eggs, no nest building needed we domesticated and brought them here as messenger birds but when they became obsolete they were turned outside and abandoned. they survived of course, but haven't evolved the necessary skills a native bird would have to truly thrive. leading to situations like this
