My ex would do this and then cheat for years this was a repeated cycle and then would say he wouldn’t waste his time and spend all his money on someone he didn’t really want to be with or would cheat on so then you end up believing it crazy enough because it sounds reasonable. Mind you I go 50/50 with everything and sometimes he literally wouldn’t let me so he would be able to say that. These people are crazy and often other people see them as the most highly respected person , mine had a mom that was exactly like him and did the same things he would do to her multiple husbands and sometimes she would even get her own son to call them to lie for her and to take her to certain restaurants he thinks his mom would like for her birthday that was said and planned out for him to say, she also would treat him the same way she treats the men in her life it was sickening she would expect him to buy her expensive stuff and expect vacations and gifts because “she deserves it” or “I raised you” and in the long run I found out everything he does is for his mothers approval that he never had as a child so he wants to become this “person” to get her validation even though nothing will ever be good enough for her, he just wants to be a good son but it is impossible with a narcissist, he quite literally learned the behaviour crazy situation. She would teach him how to do things a child shouldn’t know so he could get a girlfriend and now she wants him to have babies since she is aging you would think they were dating if you did not know them it’s sick I had to get out of that immediately
