serious question, are teachers not doing check-ins with papers anymore? we had to turn in outlines, sources, rough drafts, everything through a specific period. I feel like this stuff can be caught a lot sooner and backed up with against parents in doing that.

Had a kid turn in a 10 page play (I asked for 5). I asked him to name the characters, he couldn’t. I asked him how the play ends, he had no idea. Asked him to define the word “billowing” which he used twice and he couldn’t.

My prof told us if he suspected AI, he would email to see him during office hours to do a “verbal quiz”, where he asked questions about whatever was submitted. If you couldn’t answer anything, you got an integrity violation submitted to the university.

You can use AI to check if they used AI. Ask me, a HS English teacher, how I know 😁 I give them an opportunity to redo for 75% of the grade if they use AI & most will just take the 0. They don’t care. 🤷🏻♀️

As a teacher when I’ve encountered suspected AI, I always quiz the student on the questionable vocabulary and not one has known what the words meant. When I showed them on their paper (and that they used the word in context) they are surprised to see the word there. They had no clue. I also run suspicious writing through an AI checker, but rely mostly on the student’s voice in their previous writing to compare to.
