Reconstructionist Jew here - my rabbi talks a lot about how Jews are a "choosing" people, rather than us being a "chosen" people, which I think is really, really beautiful. Everyday we wake up we get to choose our Judaism, the level of our observance, the mitzvot we get to do, the way we move through the world as a Jew in the modern world. I absolutely love it. ❤️

The covenant thing is SO fascinating through a historic lense! It's so clearly from a time when polytheism was the norm and that transition is so so interesting to me

I'm an atheist and of the abrahamic religions Judaism is definitely the one I find most appealing. There is an intellectual freedom that the other lacks in my view.

when i was considering converting, the feeling i got from the process was “hey, are you sure? make sure you’re sure” not “are you worthy or chosen or special” because i was taking on a big decision! i didn’t go through with it for a lot of reasons but none of them were that i wasnt worthy of it.

its worth noting that the chosenness isnt because we were an especially noble nation. in fact a part of Deuteronomy we read very recently for the parsha specifically says "you guys kinda suck". G-d asked us partially because we weren't already a "great" people, we are ideally /made/ great by following the covenant. there is no scriptural basis for believing Jews are inherently superior- thats a late idea appearing after Judaism had already existed for a thousand years and only a small number of Jews hold to it. Those Jews are very influential, but they're not the majority of people.

instant follow, im Christian but always wanted somebody Jewish to explain things to me so I could better understand the root of my faith, and I dont proselytize cuz I'm not smart enough to know how and would just embarrass myself and Him

As an autistic individual with the if-you-can’t-explain-why-I’m-not-not-doing/following-it trait I don’t know how I would handle chukkim.

my favorite chukkim is "don't boil a kid in its mother's milk" because how did that get translated to "meat and dairy can never ever touch not even a little bit how dare you not have separate plates for dairy and meat"

My ex-advisor (who is Jewish) said that it’s against some rule to reveal whether a person had converted. I thought that was really interesting

As a sewist, the not mixing wool and linen chukkim commandment interests me - is it as in within one garment, aka mixed fabric, or would wearing a linen skirt and a woolen sweater also be against this commandment? It is so interesting! (Honestly, if it is just the former, blending those two fibres together would be genuinely unpleasant imo, so a surprisingly helpful commandment to me 😆)

tl;dr: jewish people are “chosen” to be part of the covenant because we choose to engage with the world, our communities, and our spirituality via specific means. anyone could come to choose that path, and some convert to do so, but we do not/should not force it on others.

i like how zachary explained it basically it’s like being chosen by your dad to do the dishes. nobody wants to do them but somebody has to.

People like you are such a gift. Learning that Judaism doesn’t proselytize was possibly the single greatest turning point in my deconstruction of my Christianity, and I learned it from a Jewish educator like you (it feasibly could have literally been you)

i have had this convo w so many christians and i think they have a hard time understanding why the framing would be that we were chosen for what is effectively more homework if it didn't also come with a prize 😭 because for them, the prize for believing is going to heaven

You don’t mix wool and linen, cause יי knew in the one day we’d need wool for winter in New York and linen for summer in Miami - they live in different closets 😂

answer for wool and linen! wool takes to acid better, whereas linen needs basic solutions. they would not have been compatible with ancient cleaning and dying practices

I recently learn that all Rabbis have to go and do “learning” in Israel. Does it mean they’re all forced to be Zionist? Could you talk more about that?
