Firstly this assumes 0% growth of the stock itself, while dividends are payout of the profit from a company it’d still be from the growth. Secondly, you didn’t discuss anything about yield. At $100 with 5% yield it would be $5, thats correct; but the valuation of the company doesn’t dip $5 its still $100. This is conversely why payouts aren’t always granted it’s based on profit. Finally, while dividends are taxed its not as broad as your describing, like you do know when you pull money from your 401k at 60 years old your still taxed right? Its not just free money, you dont have to pay fees. So what matters most is where you hold your dividends, not so much the taxable event.

I have a dividend portfolio worth roughly $6k that pays roughly $45 a week. YTD I’m up +20% on the year. Yes certain positions in the portfolio are down but some are also up very heavily. Many many many times have I received my weekly dividends and the stocks go up in share price. So at least for me this isn’t correct but I know everyone’s portfolio is different

If mutual funds pay dividends, the value decreases equivalently. When individual companies payout dividends, it’s generally additional income payed out to investors, and doesn’t generally have a direct impact on its price

I knew that worked that way for mutual funds and ETF’s but didn’t know it worked the same way for stocks. Thanks for the info.
