This sounds like the predecessor to consecrated virgins. We apparently have one in my diocese, she’s taken some kind of vows but she’s not affiliated with a convent, her superior is the bishop. I don’t really understand it 😅

this had me extremely confused for a bit when the lyrics to Under the Sea popped into my head (When the sardines/Begin the beguine/It's music to me) but I now know that refers to a 1930s Caribbean dance style

I wonder to what extent the exclusion of Beguines who were pregnant to married men or priests was because that was seen as an inherently more serious breach of their vows vs to avoid these men targeting Beguines to take advantage of the relatively generous treatment they’d get. (Though I also wonder how many pregnant Beguines actually made it back, it must have been incredibly difficult to make it through that year away from the beguinage.)
